Welcome back!
Confusion between Thesis and WordPress
Right now there is a big confusion between the founder of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, and the creator of the Thesis Premium-Theme, Chris Pearson, about the fact that Thesis should be built under the GPL-License. Matt Mullenweg insists on the fact that every software, theme or plugin that is built on a platform should automatically use the same license that the platform uses. But the question is why?
Why does a authority like Matt Mullenweg starts a discussion like that by spreading some statements which leave a lot of open space for free interpretation and in the end just causes more confusion instead of clearing the situation. Even during the discussion Matt Mullenweg says that even 100.000 Users just dont really count for WordPress because they have 25 Million users. WTF???!! Is that the spirit of the community that WordPress was built on?
But more interesting is, if the statement of Matt Mullenweg is correct that 100.000 user is such a small number of users and irrelevant for WordPress, why is Matt starting this discussion publicly? What kind of reasons can Matt Mullenweg have to start such a discussion if his own statement is correct and relevant?
And how many users do really understand and pay attention to the license issue? Why all this drama and legal drama? The only ones who will get hurt out of this are in the end WE, the users of both. And is it worth it? Is it worth to hurt us, the community, just to satisfy egos? Because to be honest all this legal discussion about the licensing is just creating a lot of confusion and useless drama.
And if Matt Mullenweg really thinks that Thesis should be GPL license why cant he just sit together on a table with Chris Pearson and show the facts and the pros and cons for Chris to go GPL. And why seems it just to be impossible that two adults are not able to sit together and find a way that can concluse all this useless discussion?
Sorry but from all what I heard today in the moderated discussion on Justin.TV the statements just leave a bitter taste for me. Both are sitting on their islands, and none is really open to listen to the arguments of the other. Instead of that both just attack each other with statistics and millions of dollars-examples which in the end just dont gets anywhere.
Matt if you are right then prove Chris with real good and understandable arguments his advantages to go GPL.
AND
Chris listen to it and then show your facts.
AND
Find a good solution for US the community.
And to be honest to blackmail Chris Pearson with the force behind the GPL License and all the big names that are willing to sue Chris, is just a expression of an attitude that has NOTHING to do with the GPL license spirit.
Come on guys lay down your weapons and sit together on a table and talk like gentleman.
