Motorola Milestone Android Update

Like i wrote a few months ago i bought my Motorola Milestone through the Amazon Store in Germany. In the beginning there was no difference but after a few weeks it turned out that the Motorola Milestone/Droid buyed through Amazon is a special version called DACH. This leads to the problem that there was no possibility to update in the last weeks to any newer version of the Android system. Whenever i tipped the point “System Update” in the phone menu i received the response that there was a problem connecting to the server. Since i had the “automatic system update” turned on, i thought it will update by himself.

Well today it turned out that this was wrong. Motorola released on 2010-02-04 an OTA update for all Motorola Milestone/Droid for the DACH series and also for the O2 series. Right now it seems that all the folks with the Vodafone series are still not getting it till today (sorry Marcus icon wink Motorola Milestone Android Update )

By accident i just pressed the “system update” in the menu and i was surprised with the message that there is a new update ready for download. The package has a size of 30,1 MB. I downloaded it immediately. The download went smoothy and after the download was finished the symbol in the left corner of the display disappeared. Nothing happened, so i pressed the “system update” again and then a window popped up telling me that the package is ready to be installed now or later – i choose install now. A new window popped up informing me that my akku is too low (well it was at 60 % energy power) for installing and that i should use the charging unit to be able to install the package. I grabbed and connected it to the power unit and here we go.

A nice little white box appeared and i could see the yellow bar on the bottom of the screen showing me the progress. After finishing the installation, the Motorola Milestone/Droid restarted on his own and the first difference i could notice was the “android” logo shined from the left side to the right side like a spot covering the logo.

The next big chance i could realize was the change of the display showing the time and the starting screen, as you can see in the next image:

The time shows now bigger like in the new Nexus One. The next change i realized was that when i went back to the “system update” function in the menu the automatic update function disappeared:

and the the operating system shows the new android version 2.0.1

The home screen floats smoother and the login through the youtube app into your youtube account works fine. It seems that they have fixed some bugs that appear to happen specially with the DACH version and a lot of crashes are fixed now.

Motorola also announced official the launch of an update for android 2.1 in the next two months, but it seems like it could take a bit longer since there are some problems they seem to need to fix first.

From what i see till now the widgets look a bit different, the Gallery has some nice looks and the most part of the MMS and SMS views look and work smarter. I will post more in the next days when the new system has gone through my heavy usage.
